Movie Review...and Alki Art Fair

First of all...a quick movie review...

Last Sunday, Steve and I went to the new AMC theater at a nearby mall, and saw Mamma Mia. Was it totally cheesy? YES! Was the quality of the actors' singing somewhat questionable? YES! Did I love it? YES! Will I buy the DVD when it comes out and fast forward to all the musical singing and dancing scenes to play them over and over? Probably. :)

This weekend we went down to Alki Beach in West Seattle to have fish & chips (a fairly common outing for us these days). While we were there, we noticed a bunch of tents set up in the park along the beach. So after our lunch we headed over to check it out. Turns out, it was the Alki Art Fair! Not a huge, overcrowded event by any means, but kind if a quiet, breezy affair along the waterfront. As Blondie would say, the "Tide was High", so there wasn't actually much "beach" to speak of...just the waves from Puget Sound lapping up against the seawall. Some of the vendors were hawking extremely cool wares...

There was one guy there who does recycled bowling ball "art" (I know, it seems like a stretch) But he covers them with beautiful mosaic-style tiles and stones, and makes them into garden gazing balls and/or drills a bigger hole into it, adds a pump and makes them into yard fountains! Now I wish I'd gotten a picture of them...but I did get a picture with this very cool "Medusa/Mermaid"...

And we found a very cool little nightlight for the munchkin's nursery.

This glass vendor actually has several ladybug themed pieces, you can check them out HERE.

In other news, I had been hoping for a quick meetup with my LID Group "secret pal" from last year, Marcy. She is a flight attendant and was scheduled on a flight to Seattle today with a one night layover. Unfortunately, the flight was cancelled due to weather back east, so we will have to wait another time. Hope to meet you (in person) sometime soon Marcy!

Fremont Sunday Market

Today Steve and I decided to take a drive up to the Fremont Sunday Market. There are many of these quasi-farmer's market/street fairs that happen around different Seattle neighborhoods throughout the summer...but the Fremont one actually has become so popular that it happens year around now! Fremont is a neighborhood north of downtown Seattle. It has changed a lot in the 13 years since I lived in this neck of the woods. Like most of Seattle, it has seen an increase in condos and chain restaurants, but thankfully it has also kept some of it's historical "funkiness".

One of the handmade jewlery vendors had a particular necklace that caught my eye...as we were walking back thru the market to the car, Steve stopped and bought for me. I LOVE IT. :)

We also bought a pound of Rainier cherries - just picked this morning - they are amazing. I am trying to keep myself from eating too many and inducing intestinal distress upon myself. They are SO good though...

There was also a vendor selling crepes - banana & nutella crepes to be specific - just like the street vendors in Paris! When I was in Paris a few years back, I had a banana nutella crepe and a sparkling apple juice (from a can) every morning...not the healthiest endeavor, but luckily I was sightseeing and walked off all those crepes! So when I saw them today, I just HAD to have one.
This was Steve's virgin Nutella experience and I am happy to report he was SOLD. We then had a conversation about the possibility of making Nutella S'mores...which I think could be absolutely amazing...so I will keep you guys posted on the progress of THAT project! :)

Afterwards we ventured into Ballard, a neighborhood northwest of Fremont and down to the Shilshole Marina, then drove back along the downtown waterfront, which was full of tourists and people getting ready to board their cruise ships at the port. All in all, a fun Sunday afternoon!

(Belated) July 4 Photos

On July Fourth Steve and I headed down to the Seattle Center to play tourist a little bit - and to give Steve a chance to see some more of Seattle. We walked around the base of the Space Needle by the fountains, and around the Japanese Garden, thru the amusement park and the Center House.

Afterwards we drove up to the top of Queen Anne Hill and enjoyed the view of downtown:

On the way home we visited the International District (a.k.a. "Chinatown") where I found some books (in English) that will be great for our future munchkin:

All in all, it was a terrific, low-key day!

Where I spent my Wednesday evening...

...and yes, I came completely unglued as if I was 14 years old all over again...

It was an awesome, awesome show.
